Remove background from signature

Upload a photo or scan of your signature and download it as a transparent PNG, with the ink kept sharp and the paper removed.

Add a photo or scan of your signature

Drop it here, paste it, or choose a file. JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 20 MB.

How to make your signature transparent

  1. Sign on plain paper

Use a dark pen on white or light paper. Black or dark blue ink works best, and a felt-tip or gel pen gives a smoother line than a ballpoint.

  2. Take a photo or scan it

Photograph the signature in even light, straight from above, or scan it. Let the signature fill most of the frame.

  3. Upload and adjust

Choose, drop or paste the image. The paper turns transparent straight away. Move Ink strength until faint strokes stay and the paper is clear, and keep the original ink colour or switch to black or blue.

  4. Clean up and download

Erase smudges, lines or the edge of the page, then download the PNG or copy it. The download is cropped to your signature, with a little space around it.

Tips for a clean result

  • Use a dark pen

Black or dark blue felt-tip and gel ink give the cleanest edges. Pencil and light ballpoint strokes are thinner and can come out patchy.

  • Choose plain white paper

Lined, squared or patterned paper adds lines you would have to erase. A blank sheet of printer paper is ideal.

  • Find even light

Stand by a window or under a ceiling light, and keep the shadow of your phone and hand off the signature. Gentle shadows across the page are evened out, but a hard shadow edge can look like ink.

  • Fill the frame

Sign a little larger than usual and get close. More pixels give smoother curves when the signature is shown small in an email.

  • Hold the phone flat

Keep the phone parallel to the page so the signature isn't slanted or stretched.

Use it in Gmail, Outlook, Word, Google Docs and PDFs

  • Gmail and Outlook

Open your email signature settings and insert the PNG as an image above or next to your typed name. Around 200 to 400 pixels wide looks sharp without taking over the message.

  • Word

Choose Insert, then Pictures, and pick the PNG. Set text wrapping to In Front of Text so you can drag it onto a signature line; the transparent background lets the line show through.

  • Google Docs

Choose Insert, then Image, then Upload from computer. Use the In front of text option to move it freely over the page.

  • PDFs

Most PDF editors can add a signature from an image. In Adobe Acrobat Reader, choose Fill & Sign and add your signature as an image.

How it keeps your ink sharp

The tool looks at the paper around each part of your signature, works out its colour there, and makes anything close to that colour transparent. Because the paper colour is measured locally, a page that is brighter on one side than the other still comes out clean.

Strokes darker than the paper stay solid, and their soft edges stay partly see-through, so curves look smooth on any background. Nothing is redrawn or traced: every pixel you download is from your own pen stroke.

Change the ink colour to black or blue

Original keeps the colour of your pen and takes the paper's tint out of the edges, so blue ink stays blue and black ink stays black instead of greyish.

Black and Blue replace every stroke with one clean colour: black suits most documents, and blue makes it clear the page was signed rather than printed. Custom lets you pick any colour, for example your brand colour for a design.

Signature background questions

Is the signature background remover free?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many signatures you clean up. Downloads are full-size PNG files.
Is my signature uploaded?
No. Your photo is opened and processed in your browser, and the PNG is made on your device. FindFont never receives your signature or the result; we only count that the tool was opened and used, without any image.
Can I use a photo from my phone?
Yes. A clear phone photo works well, as a JPEG, PNG or WebP of up to 20 MB. Gentle shadows across the page are evened out. If bits of paper texture stay visible, lower Ink strength; if faint strokes disappear, raise it.
Can I keep my pen's ink colour?
Yes. Original keeps the colour of your ink and removes the paper's tint from the edges, so blue ink stays blue. Black, Blue or a custom colour turns every stroke into one solid colour.
Why are there gaps or spots in my signature?
Thin, faint strokes can fall below the threshold, and smudges or the edge of the page can count as ink. Raise Ink strength to keep faint strokes, use the eraser for anything that isn't your signature, and Undo to take back the last stroke.
What size will the PNG be?
It keeps the resolution of your photo, up to 4,096 pixels on the long edge, cropped to your signature with a little space around it. For an email signature, show it about 200 to 400 pixels wide.
Is a signature image legally binding?
That depends on the document and where you live. E-signature services also record who signed and when, which an image can't do. Use your transparent signature for emails, letters and design work, and the signing tool your document provider gives you for contracts.
What else can I use it for?
It works best for dark writing on light paper: signatures, handwritten notes, stamps and simple line drawings. It isn't meant for photos of people or products.
