How to remove a background from an image
Add a photo
Choose, drop or paste a JPEG, PNG or WebP photo of up to 20 MB. A clear subject, such as a person, a pet or a product, works best.
Wait a few seconds
An AI model finds the subject and removes the background, usually in three or four seconds.
Fix the edges
Tap a stray piece to remove it, and use the eraser and restore brush for anything else. Undo takes back any step.
Download
Download a transparent PNG at full size, or put a colour behind your subject first.
Free full-size PNG, not a small preview
Many background removers give you a small preview for free and charge for the full-size file. Here the download keeps your photo's resolution, up to 4,096 pixels on the long edge, at no cost and without a watermark.
The AI works on a smaller copy of your photo, and the cutout is then applied to your original in your browser, so every pixel of the subject in your download comes from your own photo.
Which photos work best
Photos with one clear subject work best: a portrait, a pet, a product on a table, a car, a plant. The subject doesn't need a plain background, but it should stand out from it.
Very busy scenes, groups that blend into a crowd, and see-through things like glass are harder. Glass keeps the old background visible inside it, and in a busy scene you may need to tap away a piece or two.
Fix the cutout
Tap to remove pieces
Busy photos can leave a stray piece of background behind, like part of a table or a bag in the corner. In Pieces mode, tap it to hide it; tap again to bring it back.
Erase and restore
The eraser removes anything the cutout kept by mistake. The restore brush paints back part of the subject that was cut away, such as a hand or the tip of an ear.
Undo, redo, start over
Every tap and stroke can be undone and redone, and Undo all takes you back to the cutout as it first arrived.
Tips for a clean cutout
Keep the whole subject in the frame
A head or a product cut off at the edge of the photo stays cut off. Leave a little space around the subject when you take the picture.
Use light that separates subject and background
A dark coat against a dark wall is harder to cut out than the same coat against a light one. Light from the front or side helps the edges stand out.
Prefer sharp photos
Motion blur makes edges soft, and soft edges can be cut too far into the subject. Hold still or use a faster shutter for moving subjects.
Start from the original file
Screenshots and images saved many times lose detail around hair and fur. The original photo from your phone or camera gives the cleanest edges.
What people use it for
Product photos
Put products on a plain white or brand-coloured background for a shop, a marketplace listing or a catalogue.
Profile pictures
Place yourself on a clean colour that matches your other accounts, or keep the PNG transparent for a design.
Thumbnails and posters
Cut out a person or object to put big type around or behind them, the look used on video thumbnails and event posters.
Presentations and documents
A transparent PNG sits cleanly on any slide colour, without a white box around the subject.
Stickers
Turn a pet, a friend or a favourite object into a sticker for chats, or print it on sticker paper with a white border.
Put text behind your subject
The same cutout can sit in front of your words: type a title, pick one of more than 2,000 fonts, and it appears behind the person or object, the look used on thumbnails and posters. After cutting out a photo here, choose Put text behind it to carry it over without cutting it out again.

Remove background from signatureBackground remover questions
- How do I remove the background from an image?
- Add a photo, wait a few seconds while the AI cuts out the subject, fix any edges with a tap or the brush, and download a transparent PNG. You can also put a colour behind the subject before downloading.
- Is the background remover free?
- Yes. Cutouts are free, the download is the full-size PNG, and there's no watermark.
- Do I need an account?
- Not for your first 3 cutouts each day. After that, a free FindFont account lets you keep going, up to 20 cutouts a day.
- Can I download in HD or full size?
- Yes. The PNG keeps your photo's resolution, up to 4,096 pixels on the long edge. There's no low-resolution preview step.
- What happens to my photo?
- A smaller copy of your photo is sent to Cloudflare, which runs the cutout model, and the cutout comes straight back to your browser. The full-size result is made on your device. FindFont doesn't store your photo or the result.
- Which photos work best?
- Photos with one clear subject: people, pets, products, cars and plants. Busy scenes may leave a stray piece you can tap away, and glass keeps the old background visible inside it.
- Why does it say “no clear subject”?
- When nothing stands out from the background, such as a landscape or a wall, the AI can't tell what to keep, and the result comes back almost see-through. Try a photo where the subject is closer and clearer.
- Can I put text behind the subject?
- Yes. The text behind image tool uses the same cutout to place your words behind a person or object, in any of FindFont's 2,000+ fonts.
