10 Best Free Alternatives to Futura in 2026
Futura is commercial, but its 1920s look isn't. We measured 10 free fonts against Futura itself, and found one setting that makes Jost a near match.

Futura is almost a hundred years old and still looks modern. Paul Renner started it in 1924, when the publisher Jakob Hegner asked him for "the typeface of our time", and the Bauer Type Foundry in Frankfurt published it in 1927 (Bauer Types). Some sources date the release to 1928 (Deutsche Biographie).
Short answer: the closest free font to Futura overall is Jost. Turn on its stylistic set 1 to get Futura's single-storey "a", and the two look very similar in a headline. For heavy, bold headlines, use League Spartan.
Futura is often called a Bauhaus typeface, but that's not quite right. Renner wasn't part of the Bauhaus, though he shared many of its ideas. He developed Futura as a contribution to New Frankfurt, an affordable housing project (AIGA Eye on Design).
It went on to appear almost everywhere. The plaque the Apollo 11 astronauts left on the Moon is inscribed in Futura (Fonts In Use). According to Stanley Kubrick's assistant Tony Frewin, Kubrick used Futura Extra Bold for the posters and titles of Eyes Wide Shut and the posters of 2001, and it was "Stanley's favourite typeface" (Typographica). The Supreme box logo is white Futura Heavy Oblique on red (V&A), and IKEA used Futura for 50 years before switching to Verdana in 2009 (AP via ABC News).
Futura is commercial software, and "Futura" is a trademark of Bauer Types. Several foundries sell licensed versions: Bauer Types itself, digitised by Neufville Digital; Neufville Digital's Futura ND; Linotype and URW (MyFonts); ParaType's Futura PT (ParaType); and Monotype, whose Futura Now came out in October 2020 (Creative Review). On 23 October 2026, MyFonts listed one style of Futura Now Text at $53.99 for a single-user desktop licence (MyFonts). We found no free version from any of them, and Futura isn't on Google Fonts.
If you want Futura's look without buying a licence, these 10 free fonts from the findfont catalogue are the best places to start. All of them use the SIL Open Font License, so you can use them commercially. Unlike most lists, we measured each one against Futura itself. The full comparison is in the table after the list.
1. Jost
Best overall free alternative to Futura
Jost is the free font built most directly on Futura. Owen Earl of indestructible type* released it as "Renner*", after Futura's designer, and renamed it Jost* because of international intellectual property concerns (GitHub). His foundry says Jost aims "to keep the attitude of Futura rather than the exact design" (indestructible type*).
The numbers back that up. Futura's lowercase is small for its capitals: its x-height is 63% of its cap height, and Jost's is 66%. When we set Jost slightly larger so its lowercase matched Futura's, the same sentence was within 0.1% of Futura's length, the closest of any font we measured. It has Futura's sharp, pointed tips on A, M, N and W, and ascenders that rise above the capitals, as Futura's do.
One difference stands out. Jost's default "a" has two storeys, while Futura's is a single round bowl. Jost includes Futura's shape as an alternate, and turning on stylistic set 1 (ss01) changes only the "a":
- In CSS:
font-feature-settings: "ss01"; - In Word for Windows or Mac: open Font, then Advanced, then choose a number under Stylistic sets.
- In Figma: open Type settings, then Details, then Stylistic sets.
- In Adobe Illustrator: open the OpenType panel, then Stylistic Sets, then Set 1.
Use Jost for
- Logos and wordmarks with a 1920s feel
- Headlines, posters and packaging
- Brand identities that need weights and italics
On findfont, Jost comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, with italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Jost.
Verdict. If you only try one, try Jost with stylistic set 1.
2. League Spartan
Best for bold, heavy headlines
League Spartan has a family tree that leads straight back to Futura. Google Fonts describes it as The League of Moveable Type's interpretation of Matt Bailey's Spartan, "a typeface based on early 20th century American geometric sans serifs" (Google Fonts). The League says it took "a strong influence from ATF's classic Spartan family" (The League of Moveable Type), and Spartan was Linotype and ATF's knockoff of Futura, launched in 1939 and 1941 (Fonts In Use).
Of all the fonts we measured, League Spartan has the proportion closest to Futura's: its x-height is 62% of its cap height, against Futura's 63%. It uses Futura's single-storey "a" by default. It sets narrower, so the same sentence ran 9% shorter at the same size.
League Spartan is at its best in bold, and it's the closest free match for Futura Bold's proportions. See the Futura Bold section below for how to size it.
Use League Spartan for
- Bold headlines and posters
- Streetwear and merchandise graphics
- Logos in heavy weights
On findfont, League Spartan comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, without italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download League Spartan.
Verdict. The best free choice when you want Futura's punch in bold.
3. Outfit
Best modern take
Outfit was made as the official typeface of the brand automation company outfit.io, inspired by the company's ligature-rich wordmark (GitHub). It doesn't mention Futura, but it shares a lot of its geometry: a single-storey "a", round, open bowls and even strokes. Its tips are cut flat rather than pointed, which makes it look a little softer.
It has a slightly larger lowercase than Futura, 69% of its cap height, which makes it easier to read at small sizes. The same sentence ran about 4% shorter than in Futura.
Use Outfit for
- Websites and apps
- Startup and tech brands
- Presentations
On findfont, Outfit comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, without italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Outfit.
Verdict. Futura's round geometry, tuned for screens.
4. Josefin Sans
Best for a vintage, elegant look
Josefin Sans names Futura directly. Santiago Orozco's project notes say it was inspired by Rudolf Koch's Kabel, Rudolf Wolf's Memphis and Paul Renner's Futura (GitHub), and Google Fonts describes it as "inspired by geometric sans serif designs from the 1920s" (Google Fonts).
Its lowercase is even smaller than Futura's, 58% of its cap height, which gives it a tall, elegant, slightly Art Deco look. It has Futura's pointed capitals and single-storey "a". At the same font size, its line length was the closest to Futura's of the ten fonts in this article, just 0.3% shorter. Because the lowercase is so small, it needs a larger size than Futura to read comfortably in text.
Use Josefin Sans for
- Wedding stationery and invitations
- Fashion and beauty brands
- Vintage-style headlines
On findfont, Josefin Sans comes in weights from Light to Bold, with italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Josefin Sans.
Verdict. Choose it when you want the 1920s more than the modern side of Futura.
5. Kumbh Sans
Best for a neutral match in spacing
Saurabh Sharma designed Kumbh Sans as "a Geometric Sans Serif font envisioned to serve as a multi-purpose and workhorse font in modern web and mobile applications" (Google Fonts).
Its spacing is close to Futura's whichever way you compare. At the same font size the sentence ran 2.4% longer, and once we sized it to Futura's lowercase height it was within 0.2%. Its lowercase is 67% of its cap height. The difference is in the details: its "a" has two storeys with no single-storey alternate, and its tips are flatter and softer.
Use Kumbh Sans for
- Website and app text
- Replacing Futura with little change to line lengths
- Clean, neutral branding
On findfont, Kumbh Sans comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, without italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Kumbh Sans.
Verdict. Choose it when the spacing matters more than the letter shapes.
6. Urbanist
Best for interfaces
Corey Hu launched Urbanist in 2020 as "a low-contrast, geometric sans-serif inspired by Modernist typography and design" (Google Fonts). It keeps Futura's single-storey "a" and round "g".
Its lowercase is noticeably larger than Futura's, 72% of its cap height, so it feels more contemporary and holds up better in small interface text. Unlike Outfit, League Spartan and Kumbh Sans, it has italics.
Use Urbanist for
- Apps and dashboards
- Websites that need italics
- Tech and product brands
On findfont, Urbanist comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, with italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Urbanist.
Verdict. The most practical choice for screens.
7. Didact Gothic
Best for learning materials
Daniel Johnson designed Didact Gothic "to present each letter in the form most often used in elementary classrooms", and Alexei Vanyashin at Cyreal revised it in 2017 (Google Fonts). That gives it simple, round letters like Futura's, with a single-storey "a" and "g".
It's light and comes in one weight only, so it suits text and labels better than bold headlines.
Use Didact Gothic for
- Children's books and worksheets
- Education websites
- Light, airy text
Didact Gothic comes in one Regular weight and is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Didact Gothic.
Verdict. Futura's clarity in its most readable form.
8. Poiret One
Best for Art Deco display
Google Fonts describes Poiret One as "a fresh decorative geometric grotesque with a hint of Art Deco and constructivism" (Google Fonts). It's thin, so it works best at large sizes and in short texts.
Its proportions are close to Futura's: the lowercase is 60% of its cap height. Used large, it has the feel of a 1920s poster.
Use Poiret One for
- Art Deco and Gatsby-style posters
- Event invitations
- Large headings and short lines
Poiret One comes in one Regular weight and is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Poiret One.
Verdict. A thin, decorative relative for display use.
9. Poppins
Best if you need many weights
Poppins is often recommended as a Futura alternative, and it does share Futura's single-storey "a" and geometric construction. The Indian Type Foundry designed it between 2013 and 2016, with Latin and Devanagari (GitHub).
It looks quite different in practice. Its lowercase is 79% of its cap height, far larger than Futura's 63%, and it set 9% wider. That makes Poppins rounder and friendlier than Futura.
Use Poppins for
- Projects that need nine weights and italics
- Hindi and other Devanagari text
- Friendly, approachable brands
On findfont, Poppins comes in weights from Thin to Black, with italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Poppins.
Verdict. Popular and versatile, but not a close match.
10. Montserrat
Popular, but closer to Gotham
Julieta Ulanovsky based Montserrat on the old posters and signs of the Montserrat neighbourhood in Buenos Aires (Google Fonts). It appears on many Futura lists, but it was among the furthest from Futura in proportion, and the widest at the same size. Its lowercase is 76% of its cap height and it set 11% wider.
Its default "a" has two storeys. Its stylistic set 1 doesn't just change the "a": it switches 22 letters to the Montserrat Alternates forms, including rounded A, M, N and W, which moves it further from Futura. If you like Montserrat, see our free alternatives to Gotham, where it's our top pick.
Use Montserrat for
- Wide, confident headlines
- Brands that need a large family with italics
On findfont, Montserrat comes in weights from Light to ExtraBold, with italics. It's licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Preview and download Montserrat.
Verdict. A great font, but choose it for itself, not as a Futura copy.
Which free font is closest to Futura?
Futura's most recognisable trait is a small lowercase under tall capitals, with ascenders that rise above the capitals. Its letters are built from circles and straight lines, with a single-storey "a" and sharp pointed tips. We measured those proportions in Futura and in each free font.
| Font | Lowercase height, share of capital height | Same sentence vs Futura | At Futura's lowercase height | Single-storey "a" | Italics on findfont |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Futura, for reference | 63% | 0% | 0% | Yes | Medium Italic on macOS |
| League Spartan | 62% | -9.0% | +5.5% | Yes | No |
| Poiret One | 60% | -11.3% | -6.3% | Yes | No |
| Jost | 66% | -3.2% | +0.1% | With stylistic set 1 | Yes |
| Kumbh Sans | 67% | +2.4% | -0.2% | No | No |
| Josefin Sans | 58% | -0.3% | +13.3% | Yes | Yes |
| Outfit | 69% | -4.4% | -5.3% | Yes | No |
| Didact Gothic | 69% | -9.3% | -7.8% | Yes | No |
| Urbanist | 72% | -2.1% | -7.1% | Yes | Yes |
| Montserrat | 76% | +11.1% | -0.2% | No (its stylistic set 1 changes 22 letters) | Yes |
| Poppins | 79% | +8.8% | -6.1% | Yes | Yes |
We measured Futura Medium as it ships with macOS (Neufville Digital's version 16.0d2e1) against the Medium weight of each free font, with variable fonts set to weight 500. Didact Gothic and Poiret One only come in Regular. "Same sentence" is the length of "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" at the same font size, added up from each letter's advance width without kerning. "At Futura's lowercase height" is the same sentence after scaling each font so its lowercase is as tall as Futura's. Measured on 23 October 2026.
Each font wins on something different. League Spartan has the closest proportions. Of the ten here, Josefin Sans is closest in line length at the same size. Jost, Montserrat and Kumbh Sans are closest in line length once you size them to Futura's lowercase height, and Jost is the one that also has Futura's pointed capitals and, with stylistic set 1, its "a".
For the closest overall match, choose Jost with stylistic set 1.
For bold headlines, choose League Spartan.
For screens, choose Outfit or Urbanist.
For a vintage, elegant look, choose Josefin Sans.
To keep line lengths close to Futura's at the same font size, choose Josefin Sans (0.3% shorter). Urbanist and Kumbh Sans are within about 2.5%. If you can set the font a little larger, Jost matches Futura's line length almost exactly.
You can compare Jost, League Spartan and Outfit side by side in your own text.
What about Futura Bold?
Futura Bold is unusually wide. In our measurements the same sentence ran 20% longer in Futura Bold than in Futura Medium, and every free bold we tried set 4% to 20% narrower than Futura Bold at the same font size. Montserrat Bold was the closest in width at the same size, but its letters look nothing like Futura's.
League Spartan Bold has the closest proportions, but it's the narrowest at the same size. Set it about 25% larger than you would Futura Bold, so their lowercase letters are the same height, and its line length is within 0.2% of Futura Bold's. At that size its capitals are about 10% taller than Futura Bold's. Josefin Sans Bold (+2.8%) and Jost Bold (-4.4%) came next on the same comparison.
For a similarly heavy, slanted look, try League Spartan Bold or ExtraBold and slant it in your design app. Don't copy another brand's logo, though.
Is Futura free to use?
No. Futura is commercial, and every version we found is sold under a paid licence. Three situations come up often.
It's on my Mac. macOS includes Futura Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, Condensed Medium and Condensed ExtraBold (Apple). Apple's licence lets you use fonts included with macOS "to display and print content while running the Apple Software", and lets you embed them in content only where the font's own embedding restrictions allow it. It doesn't let you redistribute them (Apple macOS Tahoe licence). So you can't upload Apple's Futura file to a website or send it to a client.
I have Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Fonts includes Futura PT by ParaType (Adobe Fonts). Paid Creative Cloud plans include Adobe's complete font library, while free Adobe accounts get a smaller basic library (Adobe). Check Adobe's terms for your use, such as websites or apps.
I found a "Futura free download". We found no free Futura from Bauer Types or any of the foundries that license it. A copy from a download site doesn't come with a licence from them.
If you need real Futura, for example to match an existing brand, buy a licence from one of those foundries. For everything else, the fonts above are free.
Can these fonts be used commercially?
Yes. All 10 fonts in this article use the SIL Open Font License 1.1. You can use them in logos, products, websites, apps and printed materials, including commercial work, without paying. The licence also lets you embed them in websites and documents.
The main restriction is that you can't sell the font files on their own. If you modify a font that has a Reserved Font Name, you can't release your version under that name.
How to choose the right Futura alternative
Start with the "a"
Futura's single-storey "a" does a lot of the work. If your design uses lowercase, choose a font that has it by default, or use Jost with stylistic set 1.
Then look at the capitals
Futura's A, M, N and W end in sharp points. Jost and Josefin Sans keep them. Outfit, Kumbh Sans and most of the others have flat or softer tips, which look more neutral.
Check the lowercase size
A small lowercase is what makes Futura look tall and classic. League Spartan, Poiret One, Jost and Josefin Sans stay close. Urbanist, Montserrat and Poppins look more modern because their lowercase is larger.
Check the family
For long projects you'll want bold and italics. On findfont, Jost, Josefin Sans, Urbanist, Poppins and Montserrat have italics. League Spartan, Outfit and Kumbh Sans don't.
Test it in your own words
Compare the fonts side by side with your brand name or headline before you choose.
Final recommendation
Start with Jost and turn on stylistic set 1. It has Futura's pointed capitals and tall ascenders, that setting gives it Futura's "a", and sized to Futura's lowercase height its line length matches Futura's almost exactly. Use League Spartan for bold headlines, Outfit or Urbanist for screens, and Josefin Sans when you want the 1920s mood more than an exact match.
Frequently asked questions
Is Futura a free font?
No. Futura is a commercial typeface and "Futura" is a trademark of Bauer Types. Licensed versions are sold by Bauer Types, Neufville Digital, Linotype, URW, ParaType and Monotype. macOS includes Futura for use on that Mac, and Adobe Fonts includes Futura PT for paid Creative Cloud plans.
What Google font is closest to Futura?
Jost, overall. It has Futura's pointed capitals and, with stylistic set 1, its single-storey "a", and sized to the same lowercase height its spacing matched Futura's most closely of the fonts we measured. League Spartan has the closest proportions and is the best choice in bold.
Is Jost the same as Futura?
No. Jost was inspired by the German sans serifs of the 1920s and was first called "Renner*", after Futura's designer, but it's an original design. Its designer says it aims to keep Futura's attitude rather than its exact design.
Can I use the Futura that came with my Mac?
You can use it in your own documents on that Mac. Apple's licence lets you use the included fonts to display and print content, but it doesn't let you redistribute the font file, for example by uploading it to a website. For web fonts or apps, buy a licence or use a free alternative.
What font is the Supreme logo?
The V&A describes the Supreme box logo as white Futura Heavy Oblique on a red box. For a similarly heavy, slanted style in your own design, try League Spartan in Bold or ExtraBold. Don't copy the logo itself.
Who designed Futura?
Paul Renner. He began it in 1924, and the Bauer Type Foundry in Frankfurt published it in 1927.
How can I tell if a font in an image is Futura?
Upload the image to the findfont font finder. It suggests matching fonts. Then check the single-storey "a", the pointed tips on A, M and W, and the small lowercase.
